Reflecting on New Technologies and ELT

Dear @ll,
I invite you to reflect on the two disciplines we have had so far on the use of new technologies in English Language Teaching and share here what you have learned and how new technologies can and should be used in ELT so that it promotes the development of 21st century skills bringing a new paradigm to language teaching and learning.
You may share your reflections and experiences, fears, successes and plans for implemenation, what is important is that you reflect on what we have discussed and share your ideas with the group so that we can all learn together.
Looking forward to your blogging!

  1. Your classes and materials have helped me to see technology in a different perspective. I had no idea about how to connect technology and Teaching and Learning. Now, I've found on Facebook Groups, Blogs and other tools an important aid to my classes and to motivate my students

  2. When I thought of taking this post graduation course, my main objective was to learn more about the new technologies that I could use in my classroom and how I might update myself so that I would be able to make my classes both more interesting and dynamic. Althgough I have been using the communicative approach for many years I am sure that its principal focus still the same, that is meaning, communication. However, the tools that a teacher may use in the classroom have changed considerably. Nowadays we have the internet which has substituted the old flashcards and pictures. There are also other tools which promote interaction among students and teachers such as facebook, youtube, etc and those which enable students even to record themselves using the target language. Besides that, the students can search and share information that they wanted to know or needed for any of their interests.
Thus, the use of new technologies in education has helped teachers show for their students that the use of multemedia, network, etc is an invaluable tool that they will use for many years to come. Finally, I could see that the use of new technologies in my teaching has supported the communicative approach I use to teach English since the main reason for teachers use these modern technological tools is to facilitate and promote interaction between students. Thus, I may surely say that this module was also the beginning of my change in using and seeing technology in general as a breakthrough tool for education.

  3. Well, when I first think o why I decided to take up this course I guess that the best answer is that I NEED to feel as a student sometimes... No matter how we get updated, how much we study, as teachers, it's important not only to get updated, but also to feel what learning is like. I'd like to share a video that may summarize a little how I feel, OK? There it goes

  4. For me, to take this course was important because of my career, and my personal improvement, and of course for my career improvement. I always think that to share experiences with other people is a wonderful way of learning. We never know everything. Times change, assumptions and beliefs also change. And today, students live in a digital e high tech world, and we need to be prepared and updated to face this situation successful. That's why this course was so important for me.

  5. Well, This course was very important to me because I was not really envolved with tcehnologies, what I used to have in class was a radio and some CDs and sometimes films on DVD. In fact I thought that the use of technology in class was just a repetition of what we teachers were used to do but with new tools...something like the exercises on the board and the same exercises printed. Now I can see that we can work much more with computers and make things different to students...it´s much more motivation!

  7. I have to be honest that I didnt know much about what was about to come in this part of the course and it really surprised me. During the classes I was trying to figure out my own classes being connected to new technologies but when I got to school I realized how far we are from this change. As it was mentioned and showed in some classes, schools haven't changed and so many teachers act the same. I feel proud of myself for being the kind of person that wants to follow the new trends about the learning process. As an educator I understand that we should teach students to make good use of new technologies and make them realize they have a lot to learn about it. It's a fact that we are surrounded by new tools and most of the time we have them but don't know how helpful it can be in our classes. A simple voice recorder or an MP3 player could improve our classes.
My plans for the year to come are implementing some of the new tools I've learned in the course to improve my English classes and teach students to use them.
Computers, smartphones, MP4s, cameras, iPads, iPhones, etc... will be welcome to improve English classes.

  8. Hi guys! How R U? Hope y'all doing fine...
Well, I decided to take this course for many reasons, I guess. To start with, I would say that it's a great opportunity for us to get in contact with new tools and perspectives in ELT. The second reason is that as teachers, it's an amazing opportunity for us to share personal information about as many issues as we can, for instance, experiences in our schools, situations we've been through, obstacles we managed to overcome, and techniques we used that were successful and are worth sharing with colleagues. At the same time, it's pretty nice to know that technology isn't a smartboard only! With an ordinary device we can develop brilliant classes. For example, using a simple mobile, an equipment that almost all students do have. To sum up, I do believe this course is a great source of MOTIVATION, not only for us teachers but for our students as well. It's always nice to improve and acquire knowledge, and definitely, it's never enough...

  9. Hi there! I´ve decided to take this course to improve my teaching practice, since I was far from a classroom (as a student) since 2004. Although I was aware about technology I´ve never thought about making students interact and take part of the creating process. Now every time I think about using technology in ELT I am more centered on the student’s participation and not only on my creation. Technology has became more meaningful to me after this classes with Cynthia. Thanks a lot to bring such a huge contribution to our group!

  10. These two disciplines helped me a lot. I was frightened about new technologies, because I had a thinking that students could not learn with many new things.
I have seen education as transferring “stuff” (i.e. a textbook) into students’ heads. "But to today’s kids, none of that is education. To them, education is getting
prepared for the future – their future. “Some teachers make a PowerPoint and they think they’re so awesome, - "Alguns professores fazem um PowerPoint e eles pensam que são tão incrível." says a student. “But it’s just like writing on the blackboard,” says another. “And then they read it to us,” says a third. “why should we go to hear it read?”" (Eric Klopfer, Scot Osterweil, Jennifer Groff, Jason Haas (in the article The Instructional Power of digital games, social networking, simulations and How Teachers Can Leverage Them)
Students could not learn using resources beyond a book and notebook, I am of the age that there was no technology in the classroom and how I could learn a lot, I thought my students should learn the same way. But I was impressed how tasty learning using new features! Right now I'm just giving private lessons, because I'm realizing a dream: to be pregnant and therefore being a mother. But I have already started thinking about applying new technologies learned in the two courses taught by the great teacher Cynthia Rabelo at those classes. And when I return to work in schools - my expectation for 2014 - and I want to implement new features that will bring satisfactory learning and classroom dynamics.

  11. The use of new technologies in classroom can be very handy and a time-saver. Even though in the past I wasn't very much in to computers, today I do use many different sites with listening, reading and grammar activities to illustrate my lessons. Sts like it and the results are fantastic. Teaching is now much easier and learning is a lot more fun with these new technologies we have available today. I cannot imagine myself teaching today using only a book and a blackboard as tools, it doesn’t seem effective anymore.
